LORD FREDERIC LEIGHTON

VICTORIAN ERA B. 1830 D. 1896

Known For: It is considered to be Leighton’s masterpiece that showcases his natural tendency towards depicting the traditional structure. Albeit hard to know with certainty, it is guessed that the woman pictured is an allusion to the Ancient Greek sculpture art where the subjects are sometimes known to be nymphs of water and sleep. The poison ivy that was positioned on the upper right side symbolizes the delicate bond between sleep and death.

Signature Style: Light and free transparent orange dress, natural posture ...

Eye-opening Information: The Flaming June was purchased by a Polish framer in London for a mere 50 pounds. From there the governor of Puerto Rico bought the Flaming June for $ 1,000. Lastly, after an auction, it was purchased by the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where it currently resides.

WHY WE LOVE HER

His aim was to be the Michelangelo of the Romantic and Academic Art Period (1800 - 1900), a goal now considered to be achieved by him. He was influenced by Michelangelo and various French and Italian masters. He was the first painter to receive the title of Lord.
